About Glasgow

Glasgow, the most populous city in Scotland, is situated on the banks of the River Clyde in west-central Scotland. As the third-most-populous city in the United Kingdom and the 27th-most-populous city in Europe, it had an estimated population of 632,350 in 2022, while the urban area is home to over 1 million residents. Originally a small rural settlement near Glasgow Cathedral, the city evolved into Scotland's largest seaport and became prominent during the Scottish Enlightenment in the 18th century. Glasgow was a major hub for oceanic trade, connecting Britain with North America, the West Indies, and later the Orient. The Industrial Revolution propelled its growth further, establishing it as a center for chemicals, textiles, and notably shipbuilding and marine engineering. Declared the "Second City of the British Empire" during the Victorian era, Glasgow became a county in 1893 and now forms the Glasgow City Council area, one of Scotland's 32 council areas. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw rapid population growth, peaking at 1,127,825 in 1938. However, urban renewal projects in the 1960s led to significant relocations, impacting the population dynamics.
