About Dunfermline

Dunfermline is a city, parish, and former royal burgh located in Fife, Scotland, just 3 miles (5 km) from the northern shore of the Firth of Forth. Historically, it served as the de facto capital of the Kingdom of Scotland from the 11th to the 15th centuries. The area around Dunfermline is believed to have been settled since the Neolithic period, with significant growth during the Bronze Age. The city was first mentioned in the 11th century, highlighted by the marriage of Malcolm III of Scotland and Saint Margaret, who established a church dedicated to the Holy Trinity. This church later evolved into the renowned Dunfermline Abbey under their son David I in 1128, becoming a prestigious royal mausoleum that housed eighteen royals, including seven Kings and the famous Robert the Bruce, who was buried there in 1329. By the 18th century, Dunfermline emerged as an economic stronghold due to the flourishing linen industry and birthed notable industrialists like Andrew Carnegie. In 2022, Dunfermline was granted city status as part of Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours. The city is also part of the Fife Pilgrim Way, currently housing an estimated population of 58,508, with the greater Dunfermline area reaching 76,210.
